OLYMPIC SOCCER LEAGUE (OSL) HISTORY

WHY WAS THE OSLRG ORIGINALLY FORMED?

BACKGROUND:
The Olympic Soccer League Referee Group, OSLRG, was formed to service the refereeing needs of the Olympic Soccer League, a highly competitve men's adult soccer league, playing in Santa Monica, California.

MAIN HISTORICAL POINTS ABOUT THE OLYMPIC SOCCER LEAGUE (OSL)

Local Santa Monica based Men's soccer teams were talking about creating a new league in late 2003 and then formed the new OSL and started their first season in early 2004, The Olympic Soccer League was a league that had many competitive teams, including two teams in particular, that many consider to be among the top two teams in Southern California and they are Hollywood United FC and LA Blues SC.  These teams have competed against each other head to head in league competition and in other tournament competitions throughout Southern California. These two teams almost always won their tournaments they participated in and often these two teams would play each other on their way to the finals, either in the quarter finals, semi finals or finals, with the winner of their match normally winning the entire tournament.  You can see an example of the dominance of these two teams, by just one example of the many the championship that these two teams have earned.  Please see the photos below.

LA BLUES, OF THE OLYMPIC SOCCER LEAGUE, WINS THE GALAXY CLASICO III CHAMPIONSHIP ON APRIL 29, 2007, ONE OF THE MAJOR TOURNAMENTS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE CHAMPIONS RECEIVED $5000.

HOLLYWOOD UNITED FC, OF THE OLYMPIC SOCCER LEAGUE, WINS THE GALAXY CLASICO IV CHAMPIONSHIP ON APRIL 2008. HOLLYWOOD WAS VICTORIOUS OVER LA BLUES IN THE TOURNAMENT ON THEIR WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

The LA GALAXY CLASICO TOURNAMENT is one of the top major Men's Adult Amateur Soccer Tournaments in Southern California, where the Champions, who play for prize money, would be considered among the best teams in Southern California.  The fact that both LA BLUES and HOLLYWOOD UNITED each won the tournament, is further demonstration of their superiority in Men's Amateur Adult Soccer.  The fact that both of these teams played in the same league, the Olympic Soccer League, would indicate that the competition at Olympic Soccer League had to be one of the best, one of the toughest and a highly competitive, thus demanding the best referees around.  This ultimately supports the view that the OSLRG was formed to meet this demand and in so doing, created the one of the best referee groups in Southern California.

WORLD CLASS PLAYERS WANTED TOP REFEREES
Additionally and furthermore, many players on these teams have included former professional players from the World Cup and top professional players from many leagues from around the world, including the English Premier League and the MLS.

Some of the most notable players who had played in the OSL with these teams were Alexi Lalas, former USA World Cup Player, Eric Wynalda, former USA World Cup Player, Frank LeBeouf,  the 1998 World Cup Champion with France and also a former Chelsea player, and Vinnie Jones, former English Premier League player who was one of the toughest players ever in the English Premier League, played in the OSL.  Additionally, there were many other players in the OSL who have played professionally elsewhere in the world  thus, confirming again, that the officiating requirement for these games had to be high. Thus, showing once again, that the OSLRG was formed with the focus of obtaining the best officials in Southern California.

SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: LA BLUES vs HOLLYWOOD UNITED
Below, is a pregame photo taken on August 13, 2007, before the SMASL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, between LA BLUES and HOLLYWOOD UNITED.  Seen below, are the captains, three former professional soccer players and three top amatuer/professional referees at the pregame, posing for a friendly photo, just before the coin toss.

They are, from left to right, Assistant Referee Miguel Reyes, Frank LeBeouf the 1998 World Cup Champion with France 1998 and former Chelsea Player, Alex Gorin the referee, Dirk Drozen the  former International and MLS professional soccer player, Jose Botello the former MLS professional soccer player and Mohamed Ibrahim the FIFA Referee from Egypt.  This again is a visual verification, demonstrating the higher level of competitive players competing, thus in turn, needing the highest level of referees, and supporting why the OSLRG was formed.

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE OLYMPIC SOCCER LEAGUE NOW?

The Olympic Soccer League (OSL) has been dormant since mid 2007.  Many of the teams who were participating in the Olympic Soccer League in 2007 moved over to play in the newly forming Santa Monica Adult Soccer League (SMASL).  In part, because the newly developed Santa Monica Adult Soccer League is playing at the brand new FIFA Sized Soccer Field at the Santa Monica Airport Park. .

THE OSLRG TODAY IS FOCUSED ON THE BEST SERVICE
While the Olympic Soccer League is now dormant, the Olympic Soccer League Referee Group is not. The OSLRG, is fully active in providing officals through out Southern California, to soccer leagues and tournaments.

Today, the OSLRG provides top level referees to the Premier Division and the D40 (Over 40 Division) of South Bay Peninsula Soccer League (SBPSL), the Santa Monica Adult Soccer Leagues (SMASL) and others tournament organizers who need top level referees for their toughest competitions and championship matches through out Southern California.
